Welcome

Dear new members of our University community,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the family of the Department of Greek Philology at Democritus University of Thrace. Together we will be walking along the same path for at least the next four years, a decisive period both for your personal life and your future professional career. Our Department was set up in 1993 and since then it has followed an upward course. Its new Curriculum, which has been in force since 2010, will provide you with a solid, basic, theoretical as well as innovative applied knowledge. This knowledge will supply you with the necessary skills to staff not only traditional forms of employment (e.g. secondary, public and private education) but also alternative ones (publishing houses, companies of language technology, press, museums, cultural management bodies, libraries, social supportive structures, advertising agencies). In parallel, your participation in the Department Laboratories of Linguistics, of Papyrology and Palaeography, as well as in the newly established Laboratory of Modern Greek and Comparative Philology, the lectures you attend, and the experiential activities you involve yourselves, will give you the opportunity to expand your knowledge on the field of Philology and Linguistics. We invite you to actively participate in all the events and the social life of the Department of Greek Philology, and with your presence and action shape its identity. The Department Head and all personnel will stand by you in any problems you might face. I wish you progress and a constructive year. I truly hope that after your graduation you will become the best ambassadors of our Department in Greece and all over the world.

The Department Head
Professor Zoe Gavriilidou
